Michelle Obama is fierce in that protectiveness, both of her husband and her children. She believes they have to stay grounded as a family if the ideal of the great American family, black and white persuaded of their common concerns, is to have any meaning.
Whatever Obama says of his spouse in the next few days, it will not eclipse his loving – and accurate – tribute on November 4: "I would not be standing here without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years, the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation's next First Lady, Michelle Obama."
